SPAR OS — Oberschützen (A)

The aim of the design was to create a building that is as simple and functional as possible in its basic concept, which then becomes a striking, exciting and staged building and becomes the built Identity® of SPAR.

The topography of the site is cleverly exploited by the location of the building: This increases the building’s presence and impression of scale. The basic volume of the market is a rectangular cuboid with a generous building height, which is made of glass on its visible facades (east and south) in order to optimally present the range of goods to the outside. The south and east sides will have a wide projecting canopy, which will provide optimal protection from the sun even when the sun is low in the sky.

This canopy is raised upwards at the south-east corner. The edges of the roof are slightly curved. This creates a tension (like a taut muscle) in the roof silhouette. It is precisely this curve that creates a „suction“ effect from the parking lot to the back end of the building’s interior (all the way to the northwest corner).

The entrance (south-east corner) is placed directly under the most prominent and highest point of the canopy. This is staged and accentuated by a Spar-red frame. The location of the entrance further results in no „better or worse“ parking spaces in the L-shaped parking lot surrounding the market. An oversized crosswalk leads to the main entrance, marks the shopping cart area and „disappears“ at the end point of the canopy. It also supports the pull into the market.

The south facade is slightly tilted towards the interior of the market. In conjunction with the curved canopy, a strong perspective effect is created, which is additionally supported by the crosswalk. The curve of the roof continues into the interior. The interior of the building thus becomes a section of a dome, which extends upwards towards the main entrance (corner of the building) and continues in the canopy. In combination with the full-surface glazing, the impression of a much larger and more spacious store is created than it is in reality. The exterior space thereby becomes a sales panorama.

The interior itself has a room height of 4.85m. The ceiling is characterized by slender glued beams, which are arranged in a square grid. The salesroom is thus more reminiscent of a market hall than a classic supermarket.

The administrative rooms such as offices, lounge, etc. are located on the 1st floor with an unobstructed view of the sales room (above the warehouse). Delivery is made via the north side of the building, which is not very visible to the customer.

Facade

Neither Spar emblems nor logos are attached to the structure itself. The Spar brand is communicated to potential customers via two pylons visible from all directions and the intensive use of the Spar red (CD): In addition to the red frame around the main entrance, this is primarily done via the west facade, which has been bathed in the company’s CD color. It consists of square aluminum cassettes, each of which is „bulbous“ in design. This makes it a differentiated and varied structure in Spar-red for passers-by on the B50.
