LOOP — Worldwide

It all began with an idea by cellist Friedrich Kleinhapl:
to take classical music out of the concert halls and into the public realm.

Flexible Music Pavillion

In the beginning, it was the idea of cellist Friedrich Kleinhapl to bring classical music out of the concert halls and into the “streets.” His aim was, above all, to offer the younger generation a new and more accessible way to experience classical music. The performances are intended to take place at extraordinary locations around the world – and in perfect concert hall acoustics.

This inspired us to create a spatially expansive sculpture that “floats”above the musical performance, thereby visually emphasizing this new approach to presenting classical music.

The form – a three – dimensional figure eight – is based on the simple yet remarkable geometry of the Möbius strip. This is a three – dimensional structure with only one edge and one surface – a unique phenomenon among geometric shapes.

The sweeping loop – like structure connects the musical event with its surroundings and evokes associations with the human auditory system. Concert hall acoustics are achieved through a high – end sound system that is integrated into the LOOP structure. Beneath the LOOP, seating for approximately 700 people is provided, and the stage has the necessary dimensions to accommodate full orchestra performances.

The dimensions of the LOOP – 40 meters in length, 22 meters in width, and 22 meters in height – along with its global and repeatable use, place high demands on the structure in terms of transportability and adaptability to various locations and usage scenarios. To meet these demands, we worked closely with the German engineering firm “formTL,” which specializes in lightweight construction. Based on computer simulations and material studies, a steel tube framework was developed, encased in a membrane structure with pneumatic edge elements.

Evolving Concepts

In addition to the core LOOP structure, we are developing variations such as the
LOOP_Stage, the LOOP_Tribune, and configurations with multiple LOOPs. Each version offers new possibilities for site – specific musical experiences.
